Polar dials are rather unusual,
though they actually date back at least to the time of ancient Egypt,
where wooden versions have been found. They tell the time based on
the length of the shadow, determined by the height of the sun in the sky
rather than its direction.
The dial shown registers the hours between 6:30am and 5:30pm on a brass plate which is held in position by two pierced brass supports. It has been designed for a latitude of 52 degrees and so should be suitable for use in most parts of Britain, but for latitudes significantly different to this please enquire. The dial is available in two sizes - as shown, with a dial plate 300mm x 450mm (12" x 18") [ref P2] for £650, or a smaller size of 250mm x 300mm (10" x 12") [ref P1] for £280. |
