Horizontal sundials are the
sort that most people will be familiar with. The angle of the gnomon
is the same as the latitude at which the sundial is located, so dials like
these should be designed specifically for their final resting place.
Fortunately the error in telling the time does not get significant until
the latitude has changed by several degrees.
This sundial has been designed for a latitude of 51.5 degrees (London), but will be entirely suitable for use throughout the range of 50 to 53 degrees. Should you want a dial for a location outside this area, please get in touch. The dial to the left is based on a design by William Dean,C1718, which is in the Science Museum, London. It is octagonal in shape and is 25cm (10") across the flats. The pierced gnomon is particularly attractive and it has a superb compass rose as a central feature. This dial is available in either brass [ref HDS] at £175, or bronze [ref HDZ] at £195. |
| The circular sundial
to the right has a diameter of 27.5cm (11") and has an Equation of Time
calendar incorporated into the design, so that you can adjust the time
displayed to give "watch time".
The dial scale reads to one minute and has a thicker base (4mm) than normal. It is of brass [ref RDS] at £350 and is designed to your specific location. An inscription can be incorporated in the design. Special commissions of various sizes and designs can be made on request, such as this elliptical dial.
