Armillary spheres were
originally designed as a way of mapping the heavens. The various
bands represent the celestial equator and the ecliptic (the path of the
sun), and the globe would be used to sight the position of various
stars. However, these days armillary spheres are made as sundials
where the central arrow acts as the shadow-casting gnomon. As you
can see, they make very attractive garden ornaments and we make a range to
suit most tastes.
These armillaries are available in three
sizes: The armillary sphere to the right is made of solid bronze and is shown in its polished state. For those who prefer a more antique look we can apply a treatment to produce a verdigris finish as shown on the left. This armillary sphere also includes rings for the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn - not something that we routinely include, but an added extra if you should want it. (Verdigris treatment add 10%) |

This armillary sphere is 50cm
(20") diameter and is of solid brass that has been given an antique
finish. The hours and the zodiac figures are then gilded with 24
carat gold leaf to provide a striking contrast. The two armillaries
above are designed for a specific latitude, but this dial
is adjustable for latitude. Wherever you go (in the northern
hemisphere!), this dial will tell you the time accurately.
